My legs were jello after the slight uphill back to the start/finish block but I did what I call a kick to the finish(not to be confused with a kick that someone who does serious speedwork would do). I passed three or so people in the last 100, but have to admit I let up just a bit after seeing the clock at 4:50 already when I still had 60+ meters left. 4:58 finish time, not what I wanted but hopefully good enough for a 34:58 or faster 10k on August 10th.
This year it was above 90 degrees for the Elite men's race and that certainly cost everyone a few seconds, but I must have handled the heat better than most since I ran only 3-4 seconds faster than last year but placed 25th overall instead of 53rd! While I'm not proud of my time, I can't complain about that placement in a race so short and so competitive.
